Do you need an onward ticket for New Zealand?

New Zealand is the only country in this dataset whose own official text names the airline check-in desk — and it requires the onward ticket to be already paid for.

“At check-in for your flight to New Zealand, you must be able to show that you intend to leave the country at the end of your stay.”
What the rule actually says
Immigration New Zealand goes further than any other authority here in two ways. It says where the check happens — the check-in desk — and it says the ticket "must be already paid for", which rules out an unpaid hold.
It also constrains the timing: your departure date must be within 3 months of arrival, or within 6 months if you are from the United Kingdom.
Immigration instructions V2.25.1 accept "actual travel tickets (confirmed or open-dated)" or "written confirmation from an airline or travel agency that onward travel has been booked and paid for". Sponsorship on form INZ 1025 can substitute for the ticket entirely.
Who checks
This is the one country where saying "the airline checks" is a quotation rather than an assumption. Immigration New Zealand names the check-in desk in its own published text.
