What the rule actually says
The ticket sits in a short list with proof of sufficient financial means, which is the usual pairing: the authority is testing whether you can support yourself and then leave.
The specific section of the Immigration Act and the 2014 Regulations that carries this could not be located, so the departmental listing is the level at which we can source it.
One practical note that matters more at the border than the ticket does: South Africa enforces its requirement for two consecutive blank visa pages aggressively, and states in terms that you will be denied entry if you ignore it.
