Do you need an onward ticket for Malaysia?

Malaysia has no ticket condition for entry. The one place a confirmed return ticket is required is extending a social visit pass.

What the rule actually says
The statutory test is means-based, not ticket-based. Nothing in the entry provisions asks for a booking.
The ticket rule that does exist applies at a different moment: extending a Short Term Social Visit Pass requires you to "present a confirmed return ticket to their home country or third country".
That is a precise and useful distinction. Arriving is one test; asking to stay longer is another, and only the second names a ticket.
Who checks
The entry test is means-based. There is no published ticket rule at the border.
A note on airline enforcement, because almost every page on this subject states it as fact: airlines screen these rules through IATA Timatic, a paid business product with no public interface. Nobody outside the industry can check what it says for a given route on a given day. New Zealand is the only authority in this set whose own published text names the check-in desk.
